On January. 8, 2022, during Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s official visit to the Maldives, China and Maldives signed the Supplementary Contract of Implementation Contract for China Aided Micro-grid Seawater Desalination Project. The Implementation Contract for this project was signed in August, 2020.

On 8 February and 31 May, 2022, the five sets of the micro-grid seawater desalination equipment arrived in Maldives to be installed in K.Kaashidhoo、Lh.Olhuvelifushi、R.Alifushi、Ha.Kelaa and Ga.Dhaandhoo, helping to solve the clean water shortage problem.

In April, 2022, the equipment installation was started by FHNED on the first island—Lh.Olhuvelifushi. It will provide fresh water and renewable electricity power for more than 700 residents on the island after being put into use in September.

The equipment installation work for the remaining four islands is under preparation. It is believed that the project can solve the fresh water shortage problem effectively on the islands and benefit the local people.
