China “Bright Journey” and China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center brings hope to local people with vision impairment. 

In Jan. 2016, a medical team of 10 experts dispatched by the Chinese government made the first “Bright Journey” to the Maldives, screening 256 patients’ eyes and performing 107 successful cataract surgeries in Hulhumale Hospital for free. Meanwhile, a batch of medical equipment was donated to the Maldives.

In Sep. 2017, a 13-member Chinese medical team made the 2nd "Bright Journey" to the Maldives, screening 360 patients’ eyes and performing 98 successful cataract surgeries in Hulhumale Hospital and Gan Regional Hospital in Laamu Atoll for free. Meanwhile, a batch of medical equipment was donated to the Maldives.

In Jan. 2020 at Hulhumale’ Hospital, a medical team from China came for the 3rd “Bright Journey”, screening 521 patients’ eyes and performing 74 operations. 

On January 13, 2020, with a Chinese donation worth over MVR 11.1 million, the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center was officially opened. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Chinese Ambassador inaugurated the Ophthalmology Center in Hulhumale' Hospital. 

Besides offering sophisticated ophthalmic services & treatment for complicated eye conditions, the center has also provided training opportunities for Maldivian doctors, nurses & other health professionals in ophthalmic services, who worked at the center alongside Chinese ophthalmologists & nurses. 

By March 15, 2020, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center medical team has screened 1,200 patients' eyes and performed 164 eye surgeries of all types, including cataract, ocular surface, vitreous, external eye & laser treatments at the newly completed China-Maldives Ophthalmology Center.

On Jan. 8, 2022, during Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s official visit to the Maldives, China and Maldives signed an agreement on hospital assistance and cooperation. The Chinese side will provide support and assistance to the Maldivian side in building capacity for its regional ophthalmic center.
