Sister Cities: Malé & Suzhou
--Story 4 on 50 Years of China-Maldives Diplomatic Ties

Malé & Suzhou became sister cities in 2016 and have carried out various exchanges. In 2016, Maldivian chefs participated in CCTV The Greatest Chefs Challenge held in Suzhou on 19-27th November.

Maldives was represented by Chef Sobah (Soneva Fushi), Chef Fatheen (Bandos Maldives), Chef Niyaz (Hulhule Island Hotel) and Chef Nasim (Retro Cafe), and Team Maldives won overall 3rd place in the challenge! Cuisine experience was shared and friendship was promoted!

Some Maldivian children sent their drawings to participate in Jiangsu International Youth Painting Contest 2017. Yusuf Naik Vajeeh, Rafael Auz Ali, and Kiyan Mohamed Usamath won the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. Lovely children, nice pictures!

In August 2018, a Maldivian Youth Delegation including six MNU students visited Suzhou and shared experience with their Chinese peers.

In May 2019, a Maldivian Youth Delegation visited Suzhou and conducted exchanges with students from Suzhou Vocational University. The visit further enhanced mutual understanding and friendship between the youth of our two countries.

In May 2020, City of Suzhou donated 20,000 masks to Male’ City Council to help curb the pandemic. A friend in need is a friend indeed!

In September 2021, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Mayor of Male’ City sent a congratulatory video on the third Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Expo held in Suzhou. Cultural exchanges surely help deepen the mutual understanding between two peoples!
