Power Generation and Power Grid Connection in the Greater Male'
--Story 13 on 50 Years of China-Maldives Diplomatic Ties

On 28th May 2015, the Contract Agreement on STELCO Fifth Power Development Project (50MW) was signed in Male’, to increase the installed capacity of power generation and ease the power shortage in the Greater Male region of Maldives.

In April, 2019, the Fifth Power Plant, constructed by DEC, with installed capacity of 50MW, was put into commercial operation in Huhulmale.

The seawater desalination system, as a part of the Fifth Power Development Project, was also constructed to use the waste heat of exhaust gas of the Fifth Power Plant to produce drinkable water with capacity of 2000 tonnes per day for the residents in Hulhumale.


On 24 July, 2021, the construction of the high voltage power transmission line (132kV) was completed. The first across islands high voltage power grid in Maldives was established with three new substations located at Male, Hulhumale and Hulhule.

Up to now, 80% of all electricity demand of residents and enterprises in the Greater Male is provided by the power projects, thus making outstanding contributions to economic and social development in Maldives.
