On December 26, 2004, a strong tsunami hit Maldives, which was a nation-wide disaster and wreaked havoc to many islands. The Chinese government offered its helping hand to Maldives immediately.

The Chinese government launched the emergency humanitarian relief response mechanism and decided to provide the first batch of emergency relief assistance of 21.63 million RMB to tsunami-hit countries, including Maldives.

The Chinese government provided the largest-ever emergency relief of over $400,000 emergency cash aid and relief supplies, including electric generators, tents, drinking water, food, etc.

Furthermore, a special delegation from the Chinese government visited Maldives for field research. Former President Gayoom and cabinet ministers met with the delegation and appreciated the Chinese government and people for providing timely and much-needed assistance.

The delegation made a trip to the most affected island to examine the damage and express willingness to help the locals relieve their sufferings and rebuild their homeland.

On December 18, 2005, an inauguration ceremony for a China-aided housing project was held on Funadhoo island. With a total cost of $2.7 million, the project would help victims relocate and get settled.
