Coconut Pest Management Cooperation bewteen China and Maldives

In August, 2012, the technicians of the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture of Maldives visited Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Science (CATAS) to learn biological control technology to control the Brontispa longissima, a destructive palm pest, causing great damage to the coconut trees in Maldives.

In March, 2013, a large number of laboratory supplies, provided by Ministry of Science and Technology of China, including artificial climate box, pesticides, and parasitoids, were shipped to Maldives to help Maldivian Government promote technology of bio-control coconut pest by CATAS.

On 18 May, 2015, the biological control laboratory was set up in Maldives and began to produce Asecodes hispinarum and Tetrastichus brontispae for controlling Brontispa longissima.

On 8 September, 2018, a demonstration and technical training program of bio-control palm pest carried out by CATAS in Gan Island, Maldives, helping Maldivian technicians and local farmers to monitor and treat the affected palm trees.

In October, 2019, the Chinese expert team arrived in Laamu Atoll, Baa Atoll, and Haa Dhaal Atoll, investigating the occurrence, quarantine and control measures of coconut pest. Over 1.5 million parasitoids released in field coconut to suppress the pest population as well as benefit the local coconut plantation.
